Costume

Induction project

My induction project was based on vintage circuses in particular a clown costume. I chose this theme practically for this brief as a clowns clothes are often colourful and odd, which I thought I could convey with the verity of colours and shapes that come from the recycled palate we had available.

in the end I settled on a petticoat shape for the main body of the costume, as I believed it would give me a strong structure to build upon and would allow me to have things hanging from the structure to give movement to the costume while preforming to a audience. Which is why I selected a strip of fabric (that I cut to imitate a fringe trim) and decorative foil curtains to frame the petticoat.

For the general structure of the petticoat I used cardboard with wire to hold its shape, this gave me a very strong base that held the tentacle like shape very well giving me the opportunity to decorate with bows, suspenders and a flower made of SD card packaging which completed the ensemble perfectly.

Overall I really like this costume as a whole. I believe the wire gives a unique shape to the petticoat and the layered fringe adds prominent movement which I believe would translate great on a stage, catching and reflecting the light. If I was to re-make this costume I would add more of the decorative foil curtains or more overall shiny materials to make it more stage worthy under the bright lights.
